Post-Treatment Care Instructions for Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

After Treatment
Patients must avoid exposure of the photosensitive treatment sites to sunlight or bright indoor light for at least 48 hours after application of Ameluz..

  • You may shower or wash the area after your procedure.
  • You may apply moisturizers, Vaseline, or Aquaphor as often as needed.
  • You may resume normal activities (i.e. gym, work, etc.) following your procedure.
  • Light protective headgear, such as a wide-brimmed hat of sufficient size, and sunscreen should be worn at all times when outdoors.

What are the possible side effects of Ameluz gel + Blue Light PDT (Blue-U)?

During BLU-U treatment, you may feel tingling, stinging, prickling, or burning of the treated areas. These feelings should improve at the end of BLU-U treatment and should resolve within 24 hours.

Following BLU-U treatment, the Actinic Keratosis (precancerous lesions) and, to some degree, the surrounding skin may redden. Swelling may also occur. Other side effects at the treatment sites may include scaling, itching, and changes in skin color. These changes should reach a maximum the day after BLU-U treatment. However, these changes are temporary, should improve markedly by the end of the first week, and should completely resolve by 4 weeks after treatment.
